There is no perfect time…

“The habit of always putting off an experience until you can afford it, or until the time is right, or until you know how to do it is one of the greatest burglars of joy. Be deliberate, but once you’ve made up your mind – jump in.”

Charles R. Swindoll

One of the great joys of being a parent is watching your children learn and grow. It is incredible to see them lean in and try something new without fear and worry about failure or concerns about their decisions’ long-term repercussions. They never worry about whether the time is right; they just discover and learn.

How do you know when the time is right? Waiting for the perfect moment is just an exercise in waiting; there is no such thing as an ideal time to get started.

There is an imperfect time, though, and it is “never.” If you aren’t willing to seize the moment, when presented, and go at it will all your gusto and drive, then you are only setting yourself up for future disappointments.

As the Nike slogan says, “Just do it…”

Finding meaning…

“We need discernment in what we see and what we hear and what we believe.”

Charles R. Swindoll

This year I have embraced a practice of choosing 3 words to guide my thoughts, decisions and actions. This is something that Chris Brogan writes about in his blog here. I have done a similar practice in the past but unfortunately over the past few years drifted away from doing it. Why do I bring this up? Because word #1 of my 3 words for 2020 is “Discernment.”

I find it interesting to start with the technical definition of the word:

For me I am using the word “discernment” specifically as it relates to understanding God’s will, and purpose, for my life on a daily basis.

It can be so easy to be on autopilot through life. We can be so busy that that it is simple to be oblivious and only along for the ride and not apply understanding or meaning to what is happening both to us and for us. Being present and aware is the first step to living a life of discernment and understanding. Without discernment, what is the meaning to life?

Plant the right seeds…

“Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children.”

Charles Swindoll

Whether you have children or not you will make deposits in the lives of others today, and every day, through your words, behaviors and actions. If you are thankful and grateful, they will be too. If you are harsh and judgmental, then those are the memories you are building for others. You can’t control what others think about you, but you can control the seeds of those memories and how they are planted.

Today, and every day, be intentional in the deposits that you make, for someday you will only exist as a memory. Do you want those memories to be impactful or forgettable?

Do you choose to invest in your attitude?

“Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what people do or say. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill.”

Charles R. Swindoll

How much of our lives do we spend searching for the things listed in the quote above? Money, education, appearance, gifts, skills? How much time do we spend focused on improving our outlook? Our attitude? Attitude is a choice, do we spend time investing in that choice?

Do you choose to impact or be impacted?

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes.”

Charles Swindoll

There really isn’t much to add to this quote. It says a lot and truly it says it all when it comes to the power of attitude.

I will say that I am always amazed at how much impact another persons attitude can have on our own, if we choose to let it. That can be both positive and negative. A positive attitude is contagious and a negative attitude is cancerous. However allowing another person to impact us is a choice. Both for good and for bad.

When you woke up this morning what was your attitude choice for the day? Is it intentional or accidental? Does someone else’s choices frame your day or do you make the choice? Do you choose to impact others or be impacted by others?

The difference you make is in the details…

“The difference between something good and something great is attention to detail.”

Charles Swindoll

What matters more, the really big things or the little details? When I think of a great customer experience it is rarely the over the top stuff that makes the big impression. Instead it is the tiny details that create unexpected delight and moments of joy.

When a team member at Chick Fil A says “my pleasure” it doesn’t make the sandwich taste any better, but the tiny detail of conveying a servants promise in a genuine manner flavors the entire experience. When a server at a restaurant notices that I drink several cups of coffee through my breakfast and unexpectedly delivers a “to go” cup of hot coffee when they bring me the check they are delivering more value than expected and demonstrating that they are paying attention to what matters to me, not themselves.

The little details that happen all around us every day are the things that make the biggest difference when we slow down long enough to notice them. They are the things that make the biggest difference to others when we slow down long enough to deliver on them…

Think about your day yesterday, what were the small details that created the great experiences for you? What small things did you do for others that had the potential to elevate the experience from simply good too great? Even if those things you did weren’t noticed right away, or even at all, they matter. They matter for both the people you are doing them for, but perhaps even more importantly, they matter because it shows the degree of care and discipline you bring to your world and demonstrates the commitment you have to not simply being good but to being great.

Pay attention to the world today and the experiences that happen around you. What are the smallest details that impact you the most? What are the little things you are going to do that demonstrate your commitment to excellence?

Take inventory. Take notice. Pause to appreciate. Deliver your own greatness through the details.
