Are you fully present, or fully distracted?

“Distraction remains a destroyer of depth.”

Cal Newport

When was the last time you watched a movie? Did you make it all the way through without checking your phone? Did you struggle to go ninety minutes or two hours without checking in with the “digital world?” If you can’t be fully present during entertainment, a movie, a football game, or a TV show without distraction, how will you remain focused on the things that matter?

Much has been written about this being the “distracted age,” and Cal Newport’s books, such as “Digital Minimalism” and “Deep Work,” are both compelling and convicting. If you haven’t read them, I highly recommend both. It will change how you see the world.

As you move into the weekend and set aside time for rest and rejuvenation, try resting from the devices. Try turning them OFF for a couple of hours and being fully present in the moment. Life is too short to give it away to things that won’t matter in the end.
